Love is in the Air

2 Mar

Spring time is upon us and wedding season is almost in full bloom! One great thing about preparing for a wedding it that you can have a dedicated team, First Comes Love, that will be there with you every step of the way. Although we might not be there when you find the perfect dress, we can give you some tips on what styles & colors might fit just right!

Wedding Dress 101

The Bride to be

You are the ONLY one that will know what dress is meant for you! But, why not learn what styles are best for your figure.

Tips for finding the right dress, based on a spring themed wedding

Typical spring wedding dress styles: halter, empire waist with spaghetti straps, lacy long sleeves & sleeveless.

Consider length: If the wedding is outside you might not want a train if it will be drug across the ground.

Color: Aside from the traditional, white, there are other colors that are becoming more of the “norm” beige, cream, ivory & even pastel colors.

Pear shape: dress with a skirt that flares out gradually from your natural waste line. Look for stronger fabrics (taffeta or duchesse satin) that wont stretch or cling to the body. Spaghetti straps or V will also make the upper body look slender.

Apple shape: similar to pear shapes, find a dress with a detailed bodice that will create a corset effect around the midsection.

Plus size: empire waste, gradual A-line, however; avoid A-line right beneath the bust line, it give off the maternity clothes look.

Tall: simple lines, lower waist line and a floor length hem will accent your long proportions.

Petite: simple, trumpet, sheath, or modified A-line dress, avoid large bows or bold details.

Large bust: scooped or sweetheart neckline

Small bust: a ruched top will enhance and fill the bust line, halter styles are also good.

The dresses worn by the bridesmaids should feature the signature wedding colors. Chose a color and let each bridesmaid pick out a different hue. If you want to go in a different direction, chose bolder colors such as, turquoise, fuchsia & mango. Avoid satin shoes because they don’t always hold up in springtime showers.

Tan suits, colored shirts & ties. If you are going for a more formal look, a basic tux always works!

Choosing Wine for Your Wedding

4 Feb

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE wedding wine tasting parties.  It is a great way to have your friends help you to select the perfect wine to serve for your big day.

In fact, recently, we attending a wedding wine tasting party for one of our September brides.  Surprisingly, some of the less expensive wines were winners.  It’s amazing how much pretty labels and brand names influence our perception of products.  The BEST time to do the party (in our opinion) is during BevMo’s 5 Cent Sale.

Here’s Martha Strewart Weddings’ take on planning a wine tasting party:

Home in on the perfect vino for your cocktail hour or reception by inviting friends over to sample a few selections with you at least six weeks ahead of time. Offer them the three best options, but cover the labels with blank sheets of paper that have been numbered to ID each one (this way, testers can’t be swayed by brand names or cool packaging). Then swirl, sniff, swish, swallow, and have each person jot his or her thoughts on the bottles — until you’ve tasted a winner.

Wedding Day Hair Tips from Vera Wang

25 Jan

Vera Wang Bridal had launched their weekly wedding inspiration newsletter and we love it!  In this week’s edition, she shared wedding day hair tips:

Tips you should know
• Choose your hairstyle before choosing your veil.
• Your hairstyle should be flattering to the shape of your face, as well as your height.
• In general, taller brides should avoid tall hair-do’s.
• Choose a hairstyle that doesn’t disguise or overwhelm you, but rather brings out your best look.
• A guiding factor should not be replicating a hot trend; rather see what looks best on you.
• Be wary of hair extensions on your big day.
• If you are wearing a vintage-style gown, go with a modern hair-do to avoid a costume feeling.

San Diego has many great wedding day hair stylists.  For recommendations just give us a ring!  One of out favorites is Beauty Ever After!

What to Do with All Those Flowers?

5 Nov

Chances are after your wedding you will have lots of flowers left over.  Sure grandma might want to take a few arrangements home but with many brides and grooms having guests come in from out of town, most weddings I am always left with several centerpieces and alter arrangements at the end of the night.

Do you ever wonder what happens with these flowers?  Or what you can do with them to make a difference?  Sure my condo would look great with flowers all over the place (kidding!) but there are so many great things that you can do post wedding with the flowers that can brighten someone else’s day.

My FAVORITE thing to do with flowers is to donate them to Blooms from the Heart, a local organization that brings the extra flowers to nursing homes, hospitals and other great venues where they will be appreciated.  I recommend  giving them a call to spread the joy.  And if your vases are rentals, have your coordinator drop the flowers off to them and they can use their vases to redesign arrangements.

If you have just one or two small pieces left, ask your coordinator if they know a local place to donate them.  Whenever I have a few centerpieces left, I usually take them over to a local nursing home or women’s shelter.  A good coordinator won’t keep the flowers for herself, but will donate them in your name.
